Joy Lim’s Charms & Crystals
Last week I finally decided to take the plunge and treat myself to a special “me” gift for the new year. I asked a friend to accompany me to ATC, where I’d been eyeing my treat for some time now. We went straight to 50th Avenue, to Charms and Crystals by Joy Lim. After months of window shopping, I knew the store keeper, Gina, quite well. She has been patiently and repeatedly educating me about the stones and crystals and other items they offer.
I bought the 9 Eye DZI (P1,800 for the charm, P3,800 as a whole bracelet with various crystals) for this year, a good addition to my first purchase, their Friends and Allies bracelet (P2,800 to P3,800, depending on the size of the pieces). The latter consists of semi precious stones and crystals like agate, ruby, cat’s eye, peridot, citrine, jade, rose quartz, blue sapphire, turquoise, clear quartz, coral, petrified wood, tiger’s eye, pineapple shaped jade, and a stone that they call kiyat-kiyat. Their bracelets, necklaces, and charms make perfect gifts the fast approaching Chinese New Year. You might be wondering what the bracelet has done for me, and why they have become very popular, adorning the wrists of people from all walks of life. Here is my story: the charms have helped me became a positive and healthy individual.
I remember when I was young I always enjoyed looking at pictures of rocks, minerals, and gemstones in our encyclopedia. I honestly can’t remember a time when I wasn’t fascinated by the various stones and their reputed healing properties, which I only recently learned of. For some reason these crystals help me be calm and became a positive individual. Don’t get me wrong: I’m a Catholic Christian, and I believe strongly in God and am sure of my faith. The concern about New Age practices has always been in the back of my mind. There were times when I avoided the stones mainly because I was active in church, and I felt guilty believing in something that my faith would probably denounce as idolatry. But I’ve reflected many times if I truly believe in the power of the crystals and stones on their own, as something separate from the power of God, and I’ve come to the conclusion that He gave us nature to help us in our endeavors. From our nature, I believe He created these stones to help us, particularly in the area of empowerment, healing, and energy. You’ll be surprised to learn that these stones and crystals are beyond religion but are not incompatible with them; every country, culture, and faith seems to have a gemstone or a crystal as part of their expression and history.
The power of these stones are best interpreted as energies. Energy is a scientific fact; everything has energy. Perhaps more accurately, everything is energy. We can think of the elements of nature as having different vibrations and wavelengths, and the universe as a magnetic field with positive and negative charges. There are people who can be very sensitive in sensing the presence of energy, and not necessarily in a mystical sense. Perhaps you’ve been in a room or house and had a sense of whether its energy was positive or negative; we usually talk of bad energy or even bad vibes (as in vibrations), which gives us a heavy feeling similar to that of being in huge crowds, or feelings of sadness, despair, and resentment. This could be caused by a number of episodes such as fighting, hurting, and disharmony within the people living there. Positive energy gives us a sense of lightness, happiness, and optimism: perhaps the people that exude this energy are loving, happy, and in harmony with one another.
We all have energy, and humans can be both positive and negative. Have you ever encountered someone who seems to suck all the life out of you? These energy vampires (or emotional vampires, as they’re more commonly called) can make you feel tired and drained even after brief encounters. After dealing with someone like this, how do you replenish all the energy they’ve sucked out? Food, sleep, and rest can renew your energy, but there are times when we don’t get enough to renew ourselves, especially if we lack sleep and rest. We end up getting cranky, lonely, or angry, eventually losing control and feeling burned out. One solution that works for me is crystal therapy.
Some researches say gemstones seem to have the capacity to heal the body and the mind. Gem and crystal therapy is based on the belief that these stones have specific vibrations that can change a person’s mental and physical outlook. To explain further, when gem therapy is utilized, the gems pick up and transmit a specific energy wavelength to the body, which is in turn transformed into internal chemicals and elemental particles that affect us on both physical and emotional levels. Gemstones are said to be healing and some are believed to protect people from getting overwhelmed with too much bad energy or being robbed of good energy. (Gems have a long history of being used for healing and to influence the external trappings of power, wealth, and popularity, which is why most crowns are adorned with them.)
However, some critics believe gemstone therapy is really the power of suggestion, not real healing. This placebo effect makes people feel better because they believe the treatment is working. Having a tangible aid also helps the mind accept some suggestions that could be offensive if made directly: imagine telling your girlfriend that she’s fat and needs to lose weight, as opposed to giving her a bracelet will help increase her metabolism and youthfulness. When we confront ourselves and program our minds with what we want to happen, we encourage our whole being to follow. But the power of suggestion becomes more powerful when we have something physical to anchor our goals to.
I bought my Friends and Allies bracelet last year, when I needed something tangible to help me through my postpartum depression. What I love about their charms is the ritual they recommend to “program” the charms to grant your wishes. It’s like having your very own personal genie! The whole process helped me to be more specific and clear about the things I need and want. Given that premise, I was able to achieve my goals and wishes easily because I was positive about my wishes and focused on my goals, instead of aimlessly hoping for good fortune to come and happen to me.
So do I believe that my crystals have powers or their true power in suggestion? I guess I believe both: that they have the power to heal, and that the mind is so powerful that anything is possible, if only we know what we want it to achieve. But it is essential that one believes. Perhaps it’s like faith: our devotion to our novenas and prayers, even our belief in Benedictine medallions that provide protection or scapulars that promise us salvation is useless if we personally don’t have faith. Programming the stones by clearly stating what I want offers more self-direction and helps us achieve something with our own efforts. Being optimistic about your wishes and yet being realistic about how to achieve them is fundamental. I remember what my friend said to me when I was agonizing over the dilemma of buying my first charm bracelet or not. She told me “If you think it will work for you then do it.” I did. I have never regretted it since.

hi ms. shao! i just visit the charms and crystals at the mall of asia last week to buy a charm bracelet suitable for me. The sales lady advice me to buy a five bat charm bacelet for curing because i belong to the year of the rat. My birthday is march 13, 1984. i already have the five bat charm bracelet but i also want to buy the all in one bracelet. i want know if this all in one bracelet will be ok to enhance my career, health and love life.futhermore, i am working as a nurse and also want to know if i will need to buy the holy gourd clear crystal bracelet or the all in one bracelet will do.

Hi Mafhi. Wearing a Bat bracelet signifies your interest in increasing your general luck. This is because the word for Bat in Chinese is very similar to the word for good luck which is “FU”.
A Gourd bracelet is used if you are sick and have any health problems or body ailments. Are you sick right now? You mentioned that you work as a nurse, (I do as well), and the holy gourd (called WU LOU) may be useful to prevent you from catching diseases at work. The holy gourd is also used to hang on a window where the wealth star is located in a house—to prevent the wealth star from leaving the house (Of course, this changes position every year).
Different bracelets/gemstones have different purposes. You may state your concern and we will address your interest for further clarification.
Because you are a Rat, you are a “helper person” to the Ox, and you will face better luck this year of the Ox.

Hi! This is a great site. I also want to buy my first charm bracelet. I was born Oct. 13, 1972, year of the Rat. Since the Chinese New Year, I’ve had a series of misfortunes - got sick, was in a vehicular accident, major fight with husband, problems with my online account, and other minor problems. Added to that, I can’t seem to focus on my work and am feeling depressed. This is a complete turn-around from my good year last year. What crystal or charm do you suggest for me? Thanks in advance!

Hi Mafhi! It really depends on how much can you spend for the bracelet and what do you really want to have in life. I would recommend friends and allies bracelet because 1) its a little of everything and 2)having your allies with you is said to make life easier plus other stones that would help you with your needs like holy gourd for health,jade for wealth, tiger’s eye for career etc. which will be based on your birthday. This is permanent unlike all in one bracelet. You have to go to the store and replace the animal stone every chinese new year. Don’t worry , it’s done for free. I would also recommend piyao with either holy gourd jade (health and wealth) or citrine tael bracelet(money and prosperity). It has been said that piyao is a protector and a money-catcher. These bracelets are good wear every year. Five bats bracelet is good for you because it represents 5 auspicious blessings: success in career, lots of prosperity, long life, and money and good relationships. Suitable for all animal signs. In any case, please keep checking every so often, since a lot of people like Shao and Lloyd respond to the different inquiries, and the philosophies and mindsets behind each will be different, and hopefully enlightening.
Since your breakup is still quite fresh, perhaps there’s still time to talk with your boyfriend, especially since you say he still loves you… don’t put on any pressure right now, but maybe you can try to understand how he’s feeling and why this all came about, if he’s willing to talk about it. If he doesn’t seem ready to talk, though, then give him some space first, and focus on yourself for now.
Good luck dealing with the challenges that come your way. I hope they help strengthen you and help you grow as a person. :)

Hi Car. Just to follow up on my comment. I’m sorry I have to break the bad news to you regarding your bad luck stars this year. My honesty only carries good intentions. This goes for all Year of the Goat, not just you. All the Year of the Horse are also in very bad luck for this year 2009. Goat and Horses have all bad luck according to Ba Zi this year.
You can ask go to any Feng Shui consultant for a calculation and they will tell you more or less the same. There is only one Chinese Destiny Almanac this year and that is the “Tong Shu”.
My suggestion would be to just take care and hold strong to your faith and exert more caution in everything you do.

Thank you so much for responding Lloyd and Ms Betty! :) Appreciate the pieces of advice you gave me very much… It’s just that I’ve been feeling so desperate and depressed lately… with all the bad things happening since the day after the chinese new year and aside from prayers, I want to know how feng shui can help me improve my overall luck, especially luck in love. My ex has a lot of personal issues he wants to fix… I have been trying to ask him to come back to me but I dont seem to be getting any response from him. I myself own several Pi Yao bracelets myself and they’re very useful. I know for a fact that tying an amethyst stone in your bed feet is part of the Chinese culture because this is an old wives practice in ancient China.
For your interest, I know for a fact that Ms. Joy Lim herself did this when Mickey Ferriols (from Teleserye “Dyosa”) tied an amethyst stone when Ms. Joy Lim came to Mickey’s condominium for her annual Feng Shui consultation and to fix their Love Quarrel problems. While I strongly suggest a pair of Mandarin Duck display in the South (The Star #4 flies here this 2009) for better effectiveness.

Hi Summer. You asked a very extensive question, so I will provide a one-time answer. I will only do this once because it is a very lengthy research and cumbersome calculation.
You were born in the month of Wood Dragon and in the year of the Fire Snake. The luckiest colors for you for Period 8, (2004-2024) are the Water element colors = blue/black/gray. The less luckier (but still lucky colors) are from the Wood element which is green/brown.
Your Ba Zi classifies you as a “Weak Yin Wood Snake”. This means that in your earlier and latter years of life, you have a tendency to be passive and dependent on others for your general needs. This is determined by the “Yin” factor, which is the dependent/passive as opposed to the “Yang” which is the active. This is your destiny according to Chinese Feng Shui.

It’s good to know that things may not be as negative as they seem and that this may also turn out to be an even better year for me. I will persevere in my prayers. I know God is generous and will bless everyone abundantly :) It’s just that sometimes, or most of the time pala, I feel that it won’t hurt to add a little more luck ;)
By the way, I have some more questions, I hope you don’t mind:
1 - can any one of you tell me how beneficial it is to have moonstone? Is it really a wishing stone? :) Are there other charms, crystals or stones that may be considered ad wishing stones/ charms? :)
2 - should charms and crystals really need to be programmed everyday at the same time each day?
3 - are there different ways of programming crystals? the only one i know is writing the intentions/ wishes on a piece of clean paper and reciting each of them three times each everyday
4 - How do you know if your crystals/ charms need cleansing again? How often should you cleanse your crystals with sandalwood incense?
5 - If i accidentally drop my bracelet… lets say my rose quartz bracelet, and i see a slight dent or crack in one of the stones, do i need to put away the whole bracelet or is it still okay for use?
also, i placed all my bracelets in a container filled with water and left it there for hours…is that okay? although i noticed slight “discoloration” of the metals because when i wiped some with tissue, the stain of the metal goes with the tissue.
6 - Is it true when they say it’s bad to use the charms and crystals bracelet on the same wrist as where your watch is?
7 - is there a charm that i can buy aside from my rose quartz to bring more compatibility with me and my ex? im under the year of the goat (1979) and he is under the year of the horse (1978). we’re both taureans.
8 - they say that the north is pretty bad this year… is there anything that i can place in the northern part of my room to counter possible negativities that may be brought about by this? I already placed mandarin ducks in the southern part of my room since lloyd says my love star will fly to the southern sector this 2009. i just dont know what else to place in the other sectors of my room.
9 - lastly, is there a charm that could help avoid having 3rd parties or dispell 3rd parties in bf-gf relationships?

Placing your picture in the Southern Sector is actually proven to more effective to activate your Love Sector than Mandarin Ducks. Your own picture is a better “main fix” and the Mandarin Ducks are just “supplements”. And carrying any Rat item with you all the time is the best thing to do.

Regarding your question on the best time to clean your bracelets, I’ll have to leave that one to Lloyd, since I’m not familiar with how to compute the most auspicious hours for cleaning, although the hour of the rat is said to be between 11PM and 1AM (more or less during midnight), so you might try cleaning your bracelets around this time.
However, personally I find it more useful (and empowering) to try to get a feel for your own inner state to gauge when you need to cleanse your crystals of any negative energy. By this I mean that if you find yourself scatterbrained, or feeling drained, or feeling “off” in general, maybe this means it’s time to clean your crystals and yourself of any bad vibes and negative energy. This, in my opinion, will at least help you feel more in control than slavishly following a prescribed time.
As for crystals that are best for abundance and money, the traditional choices are citrine and tiger’s eye. Citrine is used to attract wealth, so it is often recommended to be placed inside a cash box or wallet. Tiger’s eye attracts helpful people and material things and also helps you see the best and most effective way to do things, ensuring that your actions result in success. It also provides the stability needed to hold on to your wealth once you acquire it.
Since you’re going abroad, you might also want some stones to protect you while traveling. Tiger’s eye is also a protective stone, so you can hit two birds with one stone (so to speak) if you get this crystal. Other crystals said to provide protection for travelers are moonstone and turqouise.

I’m sorry you’ve been having bad luck recently… if we were to consider Feng Shui, that’s actually rather unusual since, as Lloyd says, the Rat sign is very lucky this year. Ella, thanks! Great advice. When I really think about it, there are still good things going for me. Financial opportunities are still coming to me. The problem is me not being able to focus on my blessings and on things that I really need to focus on. I went ahead a few weeks back and bought my bracelet and a few crystal tumblestones. Hi Ellen. You ask a very good question. The fourth floor in a building is not a very lucky floor level. Many Chinese buildings and banks do not have the fourth floor, (3rd floor-followed autom. by 5th floor) because the number 4 is like “Failure and Death” in Feng Shui. To directly answer your question, your four good directions are Northwest, West, South East, and Northeast. I did not combine it with your husband, so this is generally speaking, you can pick the unit that is located on the sides that are good/lucky to help you prosper. The best working direction for you is the NorthEast, so you can put your office desk there. As an additional tip, you should find a poster that has the chinese word “FU” or good luck and place it in your door. But you should put the poster reverse position so that indicates good luck coming in. Make sure you do not overstep the direction because if you move towards the south AND north is not very good directions. Wu Huang Sha (Five yellow bad luck star is in North). So sorry that you are going through a tough time. You are a year of the Dog and because of that, you are extremely friendly and close to both your friends and enemies. This is unavoidable in your animal sign and is part of your Chinese animal destiny. The Rose Quartz you purchased for you and your husband is effective in enabling Love and Romance energies in your marriage. You must wear the Rose Quartz on your right hand more because this enhances your capability to show more love and affection for your husband.
Everyone here will suggest one or two types of cleansing the bracelet. Some are religious, some are hysterical, and some are just simple. The best method I know to cleanse your crystals and charms is to use regular Sea salt and water. Get a bowl of water, put a lot of salt. Dip your bracelet in for a few hours. Note: This is the rock salt you buy very cheap in regular grocery stores (Not the expensive iodized salt). Correction: I mean you as a Horse do not agree with the Chinese Ox this year (Not Rat). We are in the Earth Year AND Earth Ox 2009. Your boyfriend is a Weak Yin (Female) born under year of the Goat. What does this mean? You as a Strong Yang is compatible with him (because he is Weak Yin), but this year is not so good for him because all Goats do not have great luck for 2009.

Hi Mikaella. I am very sorry but I am NOT a Feng Shui or a Ba Zi consultant. I myself rely on my own Feng Shui consultant myself for my problems. I cannot calculate a full Ba Zi report for you because for this you will either have to consult a Chinese astrologer/Ba Zi expert OR purchase a Chinese Almanac for 2009 (Available in most bookstores) to look up your destiny.
Believe me, a Ba Zi report is VERY specific and accurate and tells you SO many amazing specific things. It is a lifetime achievement to know your destiny and so that you know how you can change it. If you do not want Ba Zi, you can go for the Tong Shu report. Or you can even go for the Zi Wei Dou Shu Purple Star calculation. All are the same, just different methods based on different calendars.
As far as choosing your wedding date… Sorry but you and your lover’s birthdates and birth hours are not enough to choose a lucky date. You ALSO have to provide your parents birthdates and birthhours as well. This is how good and bad wedding dates are calculated—including parent’s birthdate information. Also, you have to add which DIRECTION your wedding will “face” when the ceremony takes place. This is extremely important Feng Shui.
Again, I cannot calculate this for you because it is a long long long long long formula and I don’t know the formula for it…. A Feng Shui consultant is most helpful. Just remember, if Ba Zi method is used, Tong Shu method is not needed. I would advise you to send Mr. David Tong. As far as charms are concerned, I do not believe in “changing” animals every year for “Secret friends and allies”. You can put a dragon and a frog and a ox if you want to. Your five eye-dzi represents “eternity”. It means “endless” happiness and luck for the wearer. Hi Lizelle. Sequence of beads doesn’t matter. Don’t worry about it. As long as it is authentic and genuine crystal and gemstone, it will work and cleansed regularly. You can arrange it any way you want to. You don’t have to believe that sequence crap. It is not true.
Hi Sandra and Maria. Regarding your businesses and auspicious days, you should really purchase the Chinese almanac for 2009. It’ll show you and allow you which days are good for you to open and bad. It is available in any bookstore. You can also input your birthdates and calculate for yourself when is the bad time and when is the good time to open businesses. It will even show you which animal signs are not compatible in business and which ones are best to work under business deals… Sorry but I do not carry a Chinese almanac because this is not my profession. I work as a nurse so I usually call my Feng Shui consultant to check for optional advise if it is ok or not. Sorry if I dissapoint you.

I bought an Adventurine Piyao for myself through a relative in Manila. I dont know if I should wear it daily or on some occassions only when I need luck. I wear it on my right wrist as advised during purchase but I also saw that you advise wearing it on the left if I want to receive/accept something. Is it that I am wearing it on the wrong wrist based on my intentions? I didn’t know there’s a specific time for cleaning it. What would be the best time in my case?
I am an Ox (1961), born on a Friday, 13th day of the month. I live in an apartment that has the main door facing the East. The door to my own apartment though is facing Northwest. I’ve been burglarized in 2007 and seriously don’t want/wish for a “repeat” incident.

I want to know what charms or crystals I need with regard to finances… Strange negative things has been happening to me and my husband lately. We both lost our jobs almost the same time… Although my husband has found a job already, however, he still has a problem with his previous partner and employer. While I still cannot find work in spite of numerous applications… which I really find odd — can’t even get an interview.
I don’t understand, they say that rooster will have a great year this year in terms of career — What’s happening? Last year there were a number of job opportunities offered to me which I turned down — this year… I can’t even find one.

i’ve recently bought an all in one charm, a lapis lazuli and another one which, according to the lady in Charms and Crystals Galleria, is for affirmation of wishes. the all in one charm, i can feel is doing good for me. the other two which i bought days after my all in one charm, im hoping would also do. my birthday is on the 11th of June 1984 and id like to know if its ok to wear them altogether and if there are other recommended crystals which i should have.
